The Moulded Fiberglass La Chaise was originally designed by Charles & Ray Eames in 1948 for an international competition for the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

The chaise was inspired by Gaston Lachaise’s 1927 sculpture, “Floating Figure.” It features a unique organic moulded fiberglass silhouette that allows for a variety of seating positions. It also resembles a bird in flight, a common theme in the Eameses’ designs.

Charles (1907-1978) and Ray (1912-1988) Eames were American designers who revolutionized 20th-century furniture, industrial design, and architecture. They began their collaborative career in 1941 after meeting at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. The Eames are known for their innovation with new materials and technologies in furniture design. Their iconic works include the Moulded Plywood series (1946), the classic Lounge Chair (1956), and the Aluminum Group and Soft Pad series office chairs (1958). The Eames' designs emphasize ergonomics, versatility, and innovation, earning them a permanent place in major museums and archive collections worldwide.

The Archetype Forms 1948 Moulded Fiberglass Lounger: La Chaise seat shell is made of polyester resin with a lacquer finish, available in Glossy or Satin. It is mounted on five chrome-plated tubular steel rods anchored in a cruciform solid oak base, available in a variety of finishes.

Although the Eameses’ original design showcased in 1948, it was not officially released until 1991 when production techniques caught up with the design requirements. The Eameses original design is part of the permanent collections at MoMA.
