The Flag Halyard Chair was originally designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1950. It features a solid stainless steel frame, 220 meters of specially developed flag line forming the seat and back, hide bolster, and a long-haired sheepskin for added comfort.

The idea for the Flag Halyard Chair was conceived on a hot summer afternoon while Wegner was at a family beach outing, digging himself into the sand to create a comfortable lounging position to watch his children. Back at his summerhouse, he made the first sketches using the seating angles he had conceived on the beach.

Hans Wegner

Hans Wegner (1914-2007) was a Danish furniture designer known as the "Master of the Chair," significantly influencing Danish Modern design worldwide. He began his career after studying at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts and opening his own studio in 1943. Wegner created over 500 chair designs, including the iconic Wishbone Chair (1949), Round Chair (1949), and Flag Halyard Chair (1950). His philosophy, "A chair is to have no backside. It should be beautiful from all sides and angles," guided his detailed approach. Wegner's work elevated Danish design on the global stage, earning him countless awards and museum exhibitions.

Hans Wegner was primarily known for his woodwork, but demonstrated his versatility with the Flag Halyard Chair by incorporating materials like stainless steel and flag line, paying tribute to early modernist designers such as Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and Marcel Breuer.

The Flag Halyard Chair’s design is further enhanced with a leather or fabric upholstered neck cushion, held by bridle leather, and a unique sheepskin, processed without the use of chrome.
