The Barcelona Lounge Chair by leading Bauhaus figure Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was designed in 1929 for the German Pavilion at the Barcelona Exposition. The Pavilion was used as the official reception space for the Spanish king and queen during the Exposition. Van der Rohe described the need for the design to be “monumental” and “elegant” to appropriately receive royalty. Its crossbar base design was inspired by ancient Egyptian folding stools and nineteenth-century neoclassical seating. Each of the chair’s cushions is hand-cut, hand-sewn, and tufted from 40 individual pieces of leather or suede. The chair is instantly recognizable and has become a lasting symbol of Bauhaus design. It is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and won the Museum of Modern Art Award in 1977.
