The Barna Series: Coffee Table, originally released as the Barcelona Table, was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in collaboration with Lilly Reich for the German Pavilion at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. The table was part of a series of furnishings created specifically for the Pavilion, which served as a ceremonial reception for the Spanish king and queen. Its design features an “X” steel base, welded and ground to a seamless finish, supporting a thick beveled glass top.

The Barna Series Coffee Table reflects Mies’s architectural philosophy that “form is not the aim of our work. It is the result.” The structural clarity and industrial materials align with the Pavilion’s emphasis on modern simplicity and functional design. The base is consistent with other pieces in the Barcelona Series, derived from the criss-cross frame used in the Lounge Chair, ottoman, sling stool and other pieces, demonstrating his cohesive design approach across the collection.

Although the Pavilion was dismantled after seven months, the Barcelona Series designs became enduring symbols of modernism.

The Barna Series: Coffee Table pairs effortlessly with the Barna Daybed, Lounge Chair or other pieces in the collection, serving as a practical and elegant addition to contemporary interiors.
