The Barcelona Daybed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was designed in 1930, a year after the famed Barcelona Pavilion at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. This piece, also known as the Barcelona Couch, utilizes his famous maxim, “Less is more.” The Barcelona Daybed shares the same design principles as the iconic Barcelona Chair designed for the Spanish king and Queen at the pavilion. It was initially created for architect Philip Johnson’s New York apartment and serves as an extension to the Barcelona series originally exhibited in 1929. The bed has a semi-firm mattress, upholstered in animal hide consisting of 72 individual, hand cut, welted and sewn panels, a bolster cushion, and rests on a frame of mahogany and tubular steel legs. The Barcelona Daybed is part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. It serves as a daybed, an elegant bench, or extra seating. It is a lasting example of Bauhaus design. Shop the Model 258 Barcelona Daybed in Canada.
