The Barna Daybed, originally released as the Barcelona Daybed, was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1930 as an extension of the Barna Series. Developed a year after the renowned Barcelona Pavilion at the 1929 International Exposition, this piece, also known as the Barcelona Couch, reflects Mies’s philosophy of “Less is more.” Its minimalist design aligns with the architectural principles seen in the Pavilion, where Mies redefined the relationship between form and material.

The daybed was initially created for architect Philip Johnson’s New York apartment and integrates the same design language as the Barna Lounge Chair, including its refined combination of tubular steel and natural wood. The semi-firm mattress, upholstered in 72 hand-cut, welted, and sewn panels, is paired with a bolster cushion for additional support. The platform, crafted from Sapele Mahogany with a clear lacquer finish, rests on tubular stainless steel legs, creating a balance of warmth and modernity. Hide belting leather straps provide durability and ensure even weight distribution for long-lasting comfort.

As a versatile addition to the Barna Series, the daybed functions as a seating option, elegant bench, or fully functional daybed. The original Barcelona Day Bed’s inclusion in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York solidifies its place as a benchmark of Bauhaus design. The Barna Daybed continues to resonate as a timeless piece of furniture, bridging functionality and aesthetic refinement.
