The Barcelona Stool with Cowhide Sling was designed in 1930, a year after the iconic Barcelona Pavilion in 1929. Many of van der Rohe’s designs, including the Barcelona Stool with Cowhide Sling, are closely associated with the Pavilion as van der Rohe continued to develop related furniture designs into the following years. This stool combines elements of the MR Chair’s sling with the base of the Barcelona Chair. The stool features a black cowhide sling with nylon laces on a hand-ground x-shaped steel base. It is upholstered with a cowhide sling carefully attached with aluminum rivets. It won the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Award, 1977. The stool’s design is intended for royalty along with the other pieces of the Barcelona Series that welcomed the Spanish king and queen.
