The Barcelona Ottoman Stool by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was designed in 1929 as part of the Barcelona Collection. The Model 251Y Barcelona Ottoman Stool was created for the German Pavilion at the Barcelona Exposition, where it, along with the matching Barcelona Chair, provided seating for the Spanish royal couple during the event. Mies van der Rohe described the need for the design to be “monumental” and “elegant” to appropriately receive royalty. The ottoman features an x-shaped frame made of flat spring steel, inspired by ancient Egyptian folding stools and nineteenth-century neoclassical seating. The Barcelona Ottoman Stool is a footrest, a side table, or impromptu extra seating. This design is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and won the Museum of Modern Art Award in 1977. Its design is a lasting symbol of the Bauhaus movement.
