The Papa Bear Chair and Ottoman were originally designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1951, debuting at the Tidens Møbler exhibition in 1952 in Copenhagen.
The Papa Bear chair is known for its oversized wooden armrests, or “paws,” which differ in wood and finish from its legs. The complimenting ottoman shares the same contrasting wood details.

Both the Papa Bear Chair and the Papa Bear Ottoman are built on sturdy wooden frames. They incorporate a combination of natural materials, including cotton, palm leaves, and flax fiber to create the detailed inner and outer structure, which takes skilled craftsmen over two weeks to complete.
The Papa Bear Chair & Ottoman follow Wegner’s design philosophy of combining traditional craftsmanship with natural materials, functionality, and modernist principles. The Papa Bear ottoman serves as a footrest, impromptu additional seating, or a small table as needed.
