The Tugendhat Chair, also known as the Pavilion Cantilever Armchair, was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in collaboration with Lilly Reich between 1929 and 1930 for the Tugendhat House in Brno, Czechoslovakia. The Tugendhat House is considered a landmark of modern architecture and one of van der Rohe’s defining works. This armchair, model number MR70, features steel arms and a cantilever base that offers support and a subtle spring. The seat and back are made of large padded leather cushions supported by leather straps mounted on the steel frame. The design is a hybrid reminiscent of van der Rohe’s famous Barcelona Chair but with the structural innovation of the Brno Chair. The Tugendhat Chair has been featured in various collections and exhibitions, including those at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
