The Lounge Chair by Charles & Ray Eames Model 670 with a European Base is often regarded as the most iconic chair in history. Introduced in 1956, it features moulded plywood, 7-layer plywood shells, high-quality leather or fabric upholstered cushions and rests on a five-prong cast swivel aluminum base. The Eameses perfected the molded plywood technique, initially developed for wartime splints, using a process involving heat, steam, pressure, and glue to shape and press the wood to conform to the contours of the human body. Its organic shape and use of materials was groundbreaking at the time. The Model 670 Charles & Ray Eames Lounge Chair is part of the permanent collections at MoMA in New York, the Henry Ford Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The European base differs from its American counterpart as it has a more uniform metal cross design with rounded ends and different feet.
