The Moulded Plywood Lounge Chair, introduced in 1946 by Charles and Ray Eames, was part of their pioneering Moulded Plywood Collection. Known as the LCW (Lounge Chair Wood), it was designed with a relaxed profile and a contoured shape that comfortably supports the body.

The Eameses developed their moulded plywood technique during WWII, using heat and pressure to bend thin layers of wood into complex curves. This process allowed them to create lightweight, ergonomic furniture with minimal material waste. The LCW’s flexible backrest, attached with shock mounts, moves with the sitter for added comfort and adaptability.

Initially manufactured by the Evans Molded Plywood Company, the LCW demonstrated the potential of moulded plywood to create strong yet visually striking furniture. Its low-slung silhouette and sculptural form remain icons of mid-century modern design.
