The Ottoman by Charles & Ray Eames, Model 671 with an American Base, complements their Lounge Chair, often regarded as the most iconic armchair in furniture design history. Introduced in 1956, it features molded plywood, 7-layer plywood shells and high-quality leather or fabric upholstered cushions. The ottoman rests on a four-prong cast swivel aluminum base. The Eameses perfected the molded plywood technique, initially developed for wartime splints, using a process involving heat, pressure and glue to shape and press the wood to conform to ergonomic contours. The Model 671 Ottoman is designed to serve as a footrest for the Lounge Chair but can also function as impromptu seating. Its cushion is removable and fits the seat of the chair to allow rotation of the cushions for even wear. The American base differs from its European counterpart with a more angular, spider-like appearance and distinct feet design. The Model 671 Ottoman and matching Lounge Chair by Charles & Ray Eames is part of the permanent collections at MoMA in New York, the Henry Ford Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
