The Soft Pad Chair by Charles & Ray Eames, Model EA2197, was introduced in 1969 as an evolution of their earlier Aluminum Group chairs from 1958. Designed with an “executive height,” it features a higher backrest for upper back support. The chair includes soft padded, individually upholstered cushions, and a multi-padded backrest sewn onto a one-piece stretched sling. Its aluminum frame and armrests are complemented by a five-star base on glides, pneumatic height control, and a manual tilt and tension mechanism for adjustable angles. Developed to provide a cushier alternative to the Aluminum Group chairs, the Soft Pad Chair is part of several museum furniture design collections.
