The Soft Pad Chair by Charles & Ray Eames, Model EA 217, was introduced in 1969 as an evolution of their earlier Aluminum Group chairs, originally designed in 1958. This chair is designed with a “management height,” featuring a medium-high backrest compared to the high back of the executive height models. It includes soft padded, individually upholstered cushions, including a dual-padded backrest sewn onto its one-piece stretched sling. The chair has an aluminum frame and armrests, a five-star base with castors, pneumatic lift and a manual tilt and tension mechanism. The Eames Soft Pad Chairs were developed to provide a cushier alternative to the Aluminum Group chairs. They are included in the permanent collections of several museums.
