The Brno Tubular Chair was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1930 for the dining room of his renowned Tugendhat House in Brno, Czech Republic. Reflecting the simplicity of its original environment, the Brno Tubular Chair emphasizes van der Rohe’s philosophy of minimalism and functionality by leveraging the flexibility, tensile properties, and solidity of steel to eliminate the need for back legs. With its cantilever frame providing comfort and a subtle spring, the chair utilizes Mies’ idea of “eliminating the superfluous” and achieving purity in form. Architectural historian Peter Blake noted that Mies’ designs, from skyscrapers to dining chairs, reflect a process of distillation to a point of utter perfection. The Brno Tubular Chair remains one of the most successful dining, visitor, and conference chairs.
