Hommage À Mario Bellini's Camaleonda Modular Sofa, 1970
Mario Bellini designed the original Camaleonda in 1970. It was produced from 1971 until 1979 and reissued in 2020 for its fiftieth anniversary. The name joins two Italian words, camaleonte (chameleon) and onda (wave): a seating system that adapts to its surroundings, built from rounded cushions that roll like waves.
The Archetype Forms Caméléonde series is based on an in-depth study of Bellini's original Camaleonda. It follows the original module grid, the deep capitonné tufting and the ring connections that let every element be unhooked and moved.
What Makes a Good Camaleonda Reproduction
The Camaleonda is defined by three things: the depth of its tufting, the rings that tie the modules together, and the module grid that lets one sofa become many. Most copies change at least one of them, and that is where the differences show.
Capitonné Tufting
Every seat, back and arm of the Camaleonda is a single thick cushion, tufted deeply enough that the cushion swells between the tufts and the sections roll into one another. Shallow tufting, or tufting printed into a flat panel, gives a sofa that reads as quilted rather than sculpted.
Rings, Carabiners and Cords
On the original, rings, carabiners and cords join the seat, back and arm elements so the composition can be rearranged. Many copies leave the rings out or fix the backs permanently, which turns a modular system into a fixed sofa. The Archetype Forms Caméléonde keeps the ring and carabiner connections, in polished stainless steel or black.
The Module Grid and Proportions
Camaleonda seat elements sit on a square grid of about 96 cm, with smaller 66 cm ottomans, so seats, corners and ottomans line up in any arrangement. The Caméléonde is modelled on the same grid and proportions, so modules combine the way the original does.
Camaleonda | Caméléonde Modularity
The modules connect with rings, carabiners and cords rather than fixed frames. Seats, backs and arms can be unhooked and repositioned, so a three-seater can become a corner sectional, a lounge with an ottoman, or separate chairs. Each element is upholstered on every side, so arrangements can float in the middle of a room.
Mixed upholstery works well: tonal velvets, a boucle ottoman beside a leather sofa, or contrasting rings.
Camaleonda | Caméléonde Dimensions
Caméléonde Sofa: Three-Seater | 116.25"W | 40.25"D | 26.75"H (295 x 102 x 68 cm)
Seat height 15.75" (40 cm). More Caméléonde modules and compositions are being added to the series.
Archetype Forms Caméléonde Upholstery Options
Velvet A pile weave. The pile direction changes how the colour reads from different angles, which gives the Camaleonda's rolling cushions depth and two tones of light. Brush periodically in the direction of the pile.
Boucle A looped weave with a nubby, matte texture. Boucle is the most requested finish for the Camaleonda: its texture follows every tuft and curve.
Chenille Dense looped yarn with a soft hand. More textural than velvet, with a relaxed appearance.
Aniline Leather An open-pore hide, largely uncoated, that develops a patina at points of contact. Clean with a dry cloth and condition every six to twelve months with a product for open-pore leather.
Nubuck A hide buffed on the grain side to a short, standing nap. Matte and soft in appearance; maintain with a nubuck brush and do not saturate with water.
Camaleonda | Caméléonde Care
Vacuum between the tufts with a soft brush attachment; debris settles in the creases. For spills on fabric, blot from the outside of the spill inward with a lightly dampened cloth and mild soap; do not rub. For leather and nubuck, follow the material care above. Wipe the rings with a soft dry cloth.
Camaleonda Sofa Design Background
Mario Bellini, born in Milan in 1935, trained as an architect at the Politecnico di Milano and has received eight Compasso d'Oro awards. In the early 1970s he redefined soft seating twice: the Camaleonda in 1970, and Le Bambole in 1972, which won the Compasso d'Oro in 1979.
Bellini described the Camaleonda as created to fill a void: a sofa without a fixed form, which its owner could reshape. Its revival in 2020 brought it to a new generation, and it is again one of the most recognized modular sofas of the 1970s.
