The Caméléonde Sofa: Two-Seater Short Arms is based on an in-depth study of Mario Bellini's original Camaleonda sofa, designed in 1970. Two deep capitonné tufted modules, each with a high back and a short low arm, are linked by rings, carabiners and cords. The composition can be unhooked, rearranged and extended as a room changes.

Bellini named the design after the chameleon (camaleonte) and the wave (onda): a sofa that adapts to its surroundings, with rounded cushions that roll like waves. Out of production from 1979, the Camaleonda was reissued in 2020 for its fiftieth anniversary and is again one of the most sought-after modular sofas of the 1970s.

Shown in Golden Ochre Woven Velvet with Polished Stainless Steel rings and carabiners. Choose polished stainless steel or black rings and carabiners. Shop the Caméléonde collection.

The Archetype Forms Caméléonde Sofa: Two-Seater Short Arms is a faithful reproduction of the original Mario Bellini Camaleonda 2-Seater Sofa for B&B Italia, originally C&B Italia.

Archetype Forms Caméléonde Sofa: Two-Seater Short Arms

The Caméléonde Sofa: Two-Seater Short Arms is Archetype Forms' version of Mario Bellini's original Camaleonda 2-seater sofa in its short arm form. Two square seat modules, each with a full high back and a short, low arm under it on the outer side, are upholstered in deep capitonné tufting and tied together with rings, carabiners and cords. Included: two large seats, two 98 cm high backrests and two 62 cm low arms, joined by rings, cords and carabiners.

Mario Bellini designed the Camaleonda in 1970. The name joins two Italian words, camaleonte (chameleon) and onda (wave): the system adapts to any space, and its rounded tufted cushions roll like waves. The rings and carabiners are the idea at its heart. Every seat, back and arm can be unhooked and repositioned, so one sofa can become a sectional, a lounge or a single chair.

Produced from 1971 until 1979, the Camaleonda was reissued in 2020 for its fiftieth anniversary. Bellini, born in Milan in 1935, has received eight Compasso d'Oro awards. His Le Bambole series is also available from Archetype Forms.
