The Caméléonde Armchair: High Back Low Arm is based on an in-depth study of Mario Bellini's original Camaleonda modular system, designed in 1970. One deep capitonné tufted seat carries a high back over two thirds of its width and a long low arm. It works as an armchair on its own or hooks to other modules with rings, carabiners and cords.

Bellini named the design after the chameleon (camaleonte) and the wave (onda): a system that adapts to its surroundings, with rounded cushions that roll like waves. Out of production from 1979, the Camaleonda was reissued in 2020 for its fiftieth anniversary and is again one of the most sought-after modular designs of the 1970s.

Shown in Golden Ochre Woven Velvet with Black Powder Coat rings and carabiners. The arm can be moved to either side. Choose polished stainless steel or black rings and carabiners. Shop the Caméléonde collection.

The Archetype Forms Caméléonde Armchair: High Back Low Arm is a faithful reproduction of the original Mario Bellini Camaleonda Armchair for B&B Italia, originally C&B Italia.

Archetype Forms Caméléonde Armchair: High Back Low Arm

The Caméléonde Armchair: High Back Low Arm is Archetype Forms' version of a single module from Mario Bellini's original Camaleonda system. A square seat in deep capitonné tufting is joined by a high back that runs two thirds of its width and a long low arm along one side, all tied together with rings, carabiners and cords. Included: one large seat, one 66 cm high backrest and one 93 cm low arm, joined by rings, cords and carabiners.

Mario Bellini designed the Camaleonda in 1970. The name joins two Italian words, camaleonte (chameleon) and onda (wave): the system adapts to any space, and its rounded tufted cushions roll like waves. The rings and carabiners are the idea at its heart. Every seat, back and arm can be unhooked and repositioned, so one sofa can become a sectional, a lounge or a single chair.

Produced from 1971 until 1979, the Camaleonda was reissued in 2020 for its fiftieth anniversary. Bellini, born in Milan in 1935, has received eight Compasso d'Oro awards. His Le Bambole series is also available from Archetype Forms.
