Archetype Forms Moulded Fiberglass Side Chair: Dowel Base
The Moulded Fiberglass Side Chair: Dowel Base design was first introduced as part of Charles and Ray Eames’ entry in the 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design, hosted by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Originally designed with a metal shell, it transitioned to moulded fiberglass in 1950, a material that allowed for lightweight, flexible, and mass-producible furniture.
The Eameses were leaders in adapting new materials to create practical, comfortable seating that was accessible to a wider audience.
The fiberglass seat is moulded to follow the body’s natural contours, providing comfort and support. Its dowel base, made from solid wood and reinforced with steel rods, offers a balance of warmth and stability. Designed for a range of interiors, this chair works well in dining rooms, kitchens, and offices.
