The MR Side Chair with Cane Rattan was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe as part of his iconic MR Collection.  First introduced at the influential Stuttgart Weissenhof Estate exhibition in 1927, this chair combines the structural innovation of tubular steel with the natural lightness of cane rattan.

The MR Side Chair's cantilevered design was influenced by fellow Bauhaus master Marcel Breuer and inspired by 19th-century iron rocking chairs. It provides a breathable and comfortable seat and back as a distinctive alternative to the leather sling version.

MR Side Chair Cane Rattan

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe once remarked, “It is better to be good than to be original,” reflecting his belief in building on existing ideas to achieve excellence. The MR Side Chair demonstrates this philosophy, drawing on Marcel Breuer’s pioneering use of tubular steel and the flowing curves of 19th-century iron rocking chairs. The original design is featured in the Victoria and Albert Museum collection in the UK.

The MR Side Chair with Cane Rattan is available in a MR Armchair Cane Rattan version, with both versions also available in leather.
